  • World Oceans Day

Did you know that in 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided that, June 8th would be designated as “World Oceans Day”?. The official designation of World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans. The oceans are essential to food security and the health and survival of all life, power our climate and are a critical part of the biosphere.

To celebrate that date and raise awareness the Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Science invites all of us in Miami  on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday June 14 from 11 AM – 4 PM, to join them for the 4th Annual Miami Underwater Festival. The festival is a family weekend in celebration of the global World Oceans Day, full of discovery and passion for the big, blue sea. Your family will get a chance to see beautiful underwater films and photography, learn how to build their own aquarium, explore (and even touch some) sea creatures, and discover how the ocean provides a unique habitat for all kinds of life. While exploring the theme of coasts, reefs, and open ocean, visitors will learn about a variety of critters and other life forms that are important to the ocean, how to stay safe in the water, and can even participate in exclusive workshops to learn how to capture their ocean adventures through photography and filmmaking by the experts, including the Smithsonian Latino Center’s ¡Descubra! Partners from throughout the marine community will participate for a weekend that is sure to make you want to get your feet wet.
