  • 1 simple thing I do to promote Bilingualism at home

You all know that I am all about raising my “little” girls bilingual. There are many reasons for this, not only because I want them to love and honor their parents’ culture and background but also because kids that are brought and nurtured in a multilingual and multicultural environment are more adept at acquiring knowledge in general and do better in the market place in the future.

One of the many ways in which I try to promote bilingualism at home is by getting fun books or songs at the bookstore or online. You will probably agree with me though, it is sometimes hard to find interesting and quality materials. I recently came across a new collection of some of the most beloved rhymes and songs from all over the Spanish speaking world. Even though it might seem at first to be just directed to babies, I gave it a chance and my daughters, 5 and 7 years old loved them!

pollitos_iphone_6The first of the series, LITTLE CHICKIES/LOS POLLITOS, is a bilingual book based on the Los Pollitos Dicen/Little Chickies Squeal nursery rhyme/song and is an homage to the demanding nature of babies and unconditional love, care and warmth given by their mommies.

Later, I found out that Canticos was created by Susie Jaramillo, a Latina creative artist who actually drew each character by hand, to keep our Latino culture alive, and as a response to not finding enough variety of educational tools for bilingual children.

What called the attention of my girls was that the book not only had beautiful and colorful characters, but the fact that they could flip sides to switch language. It was fun and educational. Later on, I downloaded the app and we visited the youtube channel a 3-D animated video of Los Pollitos. It definitely added that extra element that kids treasure most nowadays, the digital component. I really enjoyed watching my girls touching, flipping, singing and reading in both languages.

If you would like to learn more about the books and app by Susie Jaramillo, a mom just like you and I, check the following links. To help us celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Susie is giving away the app for free. I am sure your baby and/or kids will love them as much as my girls:
