Bring the family to experience wild Vizcaya and discover the site’s biodiversity through this event sponsored by National Geographic. In a BioBlitz, curious “citizen scientists” gather to count as many plants, animals, and other organisms as possible in 24 hours. Learn techniques for exploring, observing, collecting data, and uploading photographs using iNaturalist on your phone or tablet (though it’s not required to participate). Join us, and our team of scientists and experts, to help identify the many kinds of life in Vizcaya’s pocket of preserved habitat smack in the middle of bustling Miami.

Footloose, penguin style! George Miller’s adorable 2006 animated musical, Happy Feet, screens May 14 & 15 at the Gables Cinema as part of our monthly Family Day on Aragon series! Mumble (voiced by Elijah Woods), a penguin born deep in Antarctica, learns he has a disastrous singing voice and no heartsong – two faults that virtually doom his chances for finding a partner. He also discovers he has an uncanny – and very unpenguinlike – ability to tap dance! Mumble is banished from the tribe and bravely sets out on a perilous adventure, meeting a band of dance-loving misfits, an all-knowing Rockhopper penguin, and plenty of hungry sea creatures along the way. With a top-notch voice cast including Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, and Nicole Kidman, Happy Feet proves that sometimes our most distinct differences are also our greatest strengths. During the 2007 Oscars,Happy Feet stole the show and took home the 2007 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. This film is appropriate for ages 7 and up.

Get the kids away from the TV and off and head to Fit Kids Day Color Run and Obstacle Course on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Evelyn Greer Park, 8200 SW 124th St. in Pinecrest.
The event is part of the Pinecrest Parks & Recreation Department’s obesity awareness campaign. Tailored specifically to introduce kids to outdoor fun, the event will feature all kinds of activities to get the kids moving.
