• Quote of the week

“The great motherhood friendships are the ones in which two women can admit [how difficult mothering is] quietly to each other, over cups of tea at a table sticky with spilled apple juice and littered with markers without tops.” ― Anna Quindlen

  • Ready, Set, Go: Race for the Cure with our little ones

Lace up those pink sneakers and get ready to Race for the Cure this Saturday at Bayfront Park for the Annual Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. It all starts at 7:30 am, a bit early for a Saturday morning but such a great opportunity for us to do our part in the fight against breast cancer. The 5k co-ed race kicks off at 8.30 am, but if you’re looking for a fun, meaningful way to spend the morning with your kids, check out the One Mile Fun Run (at 8:50 am) and Tot Run (at 9:45 am) which features short-distance tracks for the little ones.

As you know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when public service groups, medical professionals, government agencies and others work to promote awareness of the disease. Promoting awareness involves education about prevention and treatments, fundraising efforts to help find cures, and support for survivors and those dealing directly with the disease. Breast cancer is the fifth deadliest form of cancer worldwide.  According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 232,340 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2013, possibly even you or someone you love. There are currently over 2.9 million survivors in the United States.

Susan G. Komen is dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure originated 30 years ago in Dallas, Texas, USA, and is recognized as the world’s largest series of 5K run/fitness walk events designed to raise public awareness of breast cancer. Thanks to the interest, hard work and collaboration of a variety of non-governmental organizations, governmental agencies, and individuals who want to make a difference in breast cancer mortality rates, Komen Race for the Cure events are being organized in places throughout the world.

So, Get Ready, Set , Go!  Let’s run or walk for a world without breast cancer!
